Montana's Motor Vehicle Division's Title and Registration Bureau is so well organized it makes the entire "search and sign" process in applying for a dealership license relatively easy.

All forms can be found and all questions can be answered at the Title and Registration Bureau's office in Deer Lodge (about 80 miles southwest of Missoula on Interstate 90). The Bureau can either mail or e-mail you the appropriate forms. But first, you'll need to contact a Bureau clerk at:

  • Title and Registration Bureau
  • 1003 Buckskin Drive
  • Deer Lodge, MT 59722
  • (406) 846-6000
  • mvdtitleinfo@mt.gov

Dealer License Application

Once you pick up an application, simply fill out the usual name and address information, and also be sure to state which license or licenses you wish to obtain. The various license types include:

  • Franchised Dealer (D): new and used vehicles
  • Used Dealer (UD): used vehicles only
  • Recreational Vehicle Dealer (RV): new and used recreation vehicles
  • Trailer Dealer (DTR): new and used trailers
  • Motorcycle Dealer (MCD): new and used motorcycles

In addition, you will also need to list the name, address, date of birth, and social security number of each person with ownership ties. If any of the listed members have been charged with a felony, you will have to furnish full details. And if any of them have ownership ties with another Montana dealership, you will need to include the name and address of that dealership.

Motor Vehicle Dealer Plate Order

This form applies to first-time applicants seeking dealership plates. You will be asked to indicate which type of license you are applying for, and whether you will need dealer plates. You will be entitled to one set of dealer plates at a cost of $25 per set. You can, however, receive additional plates but only if you qualify under the formula described in Montana Code Annotated 61-4-102.

Dealer Inspection Form

This one-page form, which must also be included, can only be filled out by a Highway Patrol Officer, a law enforcement officer, or a Department of Justice compliance specialist. This form is based upon the laws described in Montana Code Annotated 61-4-101.

Before submitting your application, make sure every form is properly answered and all applicable fees are included. Failure to do so will delay your licensing.
